Regional Conference on Environmentally Sound Management of Hazardous wastes

Background:  BCRC-Egypt with the assistance of SBC organised a three days Regional Conference on Environmentally Sound Management of Hazardous Wastes. The Conference managed to discuss the best practices to manage the hazardous waste in the Arab countries.

Meeting Objectives:  The Conference objectives were to address the following topics:

• Legislation and laws related to hazardous waste and enforcement mechanisms.
• The relevant international and regional conventions
• Hazardous waste: Definitions - General concepts - characteristics and types and classification - how to trade
• Hazardous waste impact on the environment and public health
• Best practices for the safe management of hazardous waste
• The role of the media in raising awareness on hazardous waste management

Target Audience:  The conference targeted government officials responsible for hazardous waste management in the respective countries. The conference witnessed the participation of 16 participants from 12 Arab countries namely: People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Republic of Djibouti, Arab Republic of Egypt, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, State of Kuwait, Lebanese Republic, Palestinian Authority, Kingdom of Morocco, Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Republic of the Sudan and State of Yemen.

 Outcome

The Conference successfully managed to discuss the best practices to manage the hazardous waste in the Arab countries. Also the role of the media to raise public awareness of the HW issue was deeply discussed. Finally, the Arab Countries comments on the draft unified legislation for e-waste management that was shared with the participants in The Regional Symposium on E-Waste Management that was organized by BCRC-Egypt in June, 2014, were discussed and recorded.
