Highlights: The first workshop of a series organized by the BRS Secretariat to raise awareness of marine litter pollution caused by plastics. The workshop participants will share knowledge and tools available for the Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of plastic wastes. Moreover, the invited participants will receive training on the effects of plastic waste pollution in the sea and the effects caused by micro and nano plastics accumulation in the marine trophic chain. Experts and countries will share solutions at hands from replacement options to other prevention strategies. The workshop will provide opportunities to share experiences on alternative solutions to single use plastics, learning from countries which have already put in place a ban in single use plastic. The participating Basel and Stockholm regional centres will share their current efforts towards reducing plastic pollution, marine litter plastic and microplastics through policy solutions, awareness raising campaigns and marine environment monitoring programmes.
Organizers: The workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions with the support and contribution of the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre in Spain. The workshop was funded by the kind contribution of Sweden.
Working languages: English and French will be the working languages of the workshop. Interpretation from English into French will be provided during the three-day workshop.

Partner organizations as the UN Environment Programme Mediterranean Action Plan and Regional Seas Conventions. The Stockholm Regional Centre in Barcelona, Spain, will host the workshop. The workshop participants will also include academic institutions, private actors playing a role in marine litter and microplastic prevention and the UN Environment Regional sub programme coordinators for hazardous chemicals and wastes as well as the Special Programme Secretariat and the SAICM Secretariat, hosted by the UN Environment Chemicals and Health Branch.
